The Barbara Barton Nursing Excellence Scholarship
Barbara, the oldest of nine children, was born at home in Detroit, eight weeks premature, and carried to the hospital in a shoe box. She grew up in New Boston, Michigan, a rural town in Wayne County, attended St Stephen’s Catholic School and graduated from Huron High School. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Mercy College in Detroit and worked as a Registered Nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital, Livonia before marrying and moving to Jackson.
In 1973 Barbara joined the faculty of Jackson Community College Nursing Program. For over 20 years she inspired excellence in many of our local caregivers. Following her long career, she was made an emeritus retiree of Jackson College.
It was rare to travel about Jackson County and not meet one of her students. She made great impact on the community of caregivers in Jackson, including some of the very individuals who administered her end of life care.
Barbara’s family will forever love the Jackson College community and want to continue the legacy of her service and dedication to the nursing programs at Jackson College. Combined with funds set aside by Barbara, her family was able to establish the Barbara Barton Nursing Excellence Scholarship fund that will support students in their nursing degree pursuits at JC.
